Skilfull and fascinatingMoral issues, ethical concerns and spiritual matters are themes in the work of many contemporary North American writers, singers, painters and sculptors. Religious imagery and symbolism abound.
Yet how much do these themes and literary devices reflect the artists' beliefs?
This is the question posed by Douglas Todd, author of The Soul-Searcher's Guide to the Galaxy.
In Brave Souls, he questions 28 artists about their work and the philosophy and beliefs central to their lives. The eclectic group includes film director Paul Verhoeven, sculptor Bill Reid, cartoonist Lynn Johnston, Inuk singer Susan Aglukark and writer Carol Shields.
Nearly all attended worship in their youth, and a few still attend occasionally. But all are troubled by religious orthodoxy and their spiritual search is taking place outside institutional religion.
Their responses provide a range of spiritual insights that Todd groups in four sections: the atheists; the doubters; the new ancients, whose faith is rooted in organized religion, and the emerging mystics.
Some common themes emerge. Johnston speaks for several artists when she says she cannot accept Christ's divinity. "I'm starting to see other people as divine, too -- such as saints and exceptional people," she says.
Many artists echo Shields' belief in the centrality of love.
"It's your basic molecule," she comments. "Why else would we make an effort to be sort of good in the world and with one another, if it weren't for this kind of mystical connection that holds us together?"
Robertson Davies, interviewed shortly before his death, talked of his lifetime interest in the Christian heresy of Gnosticism, which led him to a belief in God's feminine aspect. Singers Susan Aglukark and Bruce Cockburn reveal they have continuing conversations with God.
Timothy Findley has felt the presence of God in the vast Arctic barrens.
Writer Laurence Gough says he experienced the presence of God while keeping a deathbed vigil. Of his stepfather's death, Gough recalls "a real sense of rustling in the air -- a sense he had risen up out of himself, of something leaving him when he died. And not just life itself. but something far more powerful than that."
Todd has skilfully culled the essence of each artist's beliefs. It all makes fascinating, and, at times, thought-provoking reading.

The Best Books Ever!!!
!!!!!

FlashTV! highly recommends this book!Nicholas Da Silva, ...
Essential Reference for theNext Wave of FlashJanet Galore and Todd Kelsey lay it all out clearly and write in an easy to read style that doesn't skimp on details. The entire book is laden with terrific artwork and helpful screen grabs that support the text. Very undaunting for the visually inclined.
The sections on video exporting, and postproduction effects was particularly eye opening. this section alone cleared a lot uncertainty for me.
While this book won't make the reader a better Flash animator/designer, it most definately will make any level Animator or designer a more informed artist. It will open a lot of doors personaly and in the hands of a talented, creative person, change the ever evolving face of the Flash community indelibly.
Accidental Double Entry for a good bookIts just a matter of time before more content shifts from work stations to the living room.
Janet Galore and Todd Kelsey write in a clear matter of fact style that reads efforlessly but doesn't skimp on the needed details to produce Broadcast Quality animation. This book is laden with terrific artwork and screen shots to guide the designer or animator in everystep towards making the transition from the Web to Television.
While this book will not teach you how to be a better animator or designer, It Will instantly broaden the stage greatly for the experienced and give the new Flash User even more of a reason to get better.

Good movie, good scpript."I came."
OUTRAGEOUS,OFFENSIVE...HILARIOUS
Better than Pulp FictionIn my opinion, I rank it above Pulp Fiction. While Pulp is intentionally made to be cool and stylish, Happiness is totally honest, minus the coolness and style. I know they're a totally different movie, but I can't help making the comparison because Pulp Fiction is mentioned in the blurp by Vogue on the back cover.
Well, I'm sorry if you're a Pulp's fan...

Yet Another Clasic by Strasser
Sweet Book !!!!
Oh My Golly

True Riches are rarely in the rut you live inTodd sent me this book to review ,I scanned it, and really did not pay a lot of attention; then I got an e mail asking if I had done a review; and as I had not, I sat down and read the book. I am really glad that I did. The book spoke into my life about what matters as opposed to what the culture considers important.
Todd takes us with him as he reexamines his life to see how having it all may not be as good as losing it all if in the losing we discover that which is truly of value. He well says that if your dream is money that you will never have enough and you will always have anxiety about losing that you have. This happened in Todd's life when he lost his second pile of money and decided to see another side of life.
What he discovered, and the interview with Satin in which the most effective weapons of the evil one are shown; is more that worth the price of the book.Once you learn the most effective tool that Satin uses to try to steal your peace your joy and ultimately your soul the choice will be yours as to what you do. The author does something all too rare in Christian writing and that is color outside the box. Become convinced that God made you unique and that He did not intend for you to be struck in a rat race. Todd challenges us to Fear God and nothing else.
This book could set you free and allow you to see a whole other way of living that is abundant and full of Peace and Joy. If however you are content in your rut, if you are enamored of your chains and if you really think that another pile of money will meet all your needs, forget spend the money on therapy instead of this book.
